Kat Newman - Art by Kat Newman

Meet the Artist

Kat Newman is a contemporary British abstract artist based in Milton Keynes.

Kat is a self taught painter who discovered painting in her early thirties as a way to express the many things she couldn't put into words.

Encouraged by her therapist, Kat utilised the pandemic lockdowns to explore different creative mediums. Kat finally settled on painting with acrylics on cotton canvas as she was attracted to their vibrancy, zest, and resilience.

Kat describes her work as an exhilarating dance between calm and chaos, which she feels is an authentic expression of her inner world.

To this end, Kat uses lines from poetry she has written as the titles of her artwork:

"I want my work to really resonate and connect with the viewer, and I hope the intimacy of the titles I choose for each piece give a window into what was happening for me at the time of their creation".

Artist Manifesto

My art is pain resurrected into beauty.

My art is a physical embodiment of my commitment to fail forward, to take risks, to be unapologetic, to take up space and to be fully seen.

My art is a pathway to freedom and liberation from all the 'should's' and similar cages others attempt to build around me.

My art is bringing to life all of the parts of myself that I have not yet met, but that ache and beat and thrive inside of me.

My art is the answer to the question, 'What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?' (Mary Oliver).

My art is the most feral, untamed, unruly and uncontrollable parts of myself made manifest - no, we will not be quiet and no, we will not slow down.

"I chose Kat's painting for the New Beginnings exhibition as I enjoyed her mix of colours and the energy in the piece. I also loved the poetic title which added a story element to the overall image."
