I've Always Been Drawn To The Same Colours

I've Always Been Drawn To The Same Colours

Since the beginning of my creative journey, I’ve been drawn to the same limited colour palette.

Phtalo blue, green and turquoise. Ultramarine. Raw sienna. Yellow ochre. Cerulean blue. Naples yellow.

I thought as I developed my colour palette would grow, and it has, but mostly my technique and knowledge has expanded and I’ve realised you can achieve a whole kaleidoscope of effects using the same few colours.

As I once feared, these colours have not become a cage I’m trapped in. My recent commissions have made me realise I can step outside the norm anytime I want.

The beautiful yellow paintings shone like gemstones, and I realised, I’m drawn to colours in art that symbolise nature but that are also regal, bold, rich, jewel like and timeless.

In ‘The Secret Lives of Colour’ by Kassia St Clair she shares that from the Middle Ages, the precious pigment Ultramarine was the most coveted bar none for centuries. It was costly and labour intensive to produce, and the pigments expense helped stoke both desire and demand.

Here I am, centuries later, and Ultramarine - amongst other vibrant blues - remains my most sought after. Joan Miro famously said of beautiful blue, ‘ceci est la coleur de mes reves’ or in English, ‘this is the colour of my dreams’.

All of my beautiful blues are now available as affordable fine art prints on both canvas and archival quality paper under the new ‘Fine Art Prints’ section on my website. Thank you to those of you who shared your suggestions, I am listening.

Have a quick look and then send me a message to tell me what you think - hearing from you really does make my day!
